Call for Talent – Leicester
Pride 2003
Leicester Pride – the annual
lesbian and gay arts festival for Leicester
and the East Midlands – invites
local performers to participate in this
year’s festival on Saturday 21st
June 2003.
Announcing the organisation’s
new Open Stage policy, Sal Khalifa,
the Leicester Pride Stage Co-ordinator,
said that:
We would love to hear from local established
and aspiring performers in the areas
of music, dance and cabaret who are
interested in joining the lesbian and
gay community on our day of celebration.
Leicester Pride is a community arts
forum, dedicated to programming the
best of local talent alongside artists
from across the UK. As we are based
in one of the UK’s most celebrated
multi-cultural communities, we are also
committed to building a unique cross
cultural programme. Last year we featured
the music of Bollywood, Egyptian dance
and Punjabi drumming alongside pop and
rock acts and cabaret artists to great
success. We hope that the involvement
of artists from Leicester’s Black
and Asian communities will help build
relationships between communities and
find new audiences.
Leicester Pride has a number of stages
that will be used to showcase local
talent at this summer’s festival
including moving performance platforms
in the Pride Parade, the Main Stage
at the heart of the festival arena and
the Trade Dance Tent. The one-day festival
features approximately 15 hours of live
parallel programming giving plenty of
scope for the involvement of artists
from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.
Individuals and groups interested in
performing at Leicester Pride 2003 are
invited to request an application pack
from Leicester Pride (Tel: 0116 2541747).
Completed applications should be returned
with publicity material and sample CDs
or other illustrations of work to Sal
Khalifa, the Leicester Pride Stage-Co-ordinator:
Leicester Pride, 15 Wellington Street,
Leicester, LE1 6HH. The deadline for
applications is 30 April 2003. Material
sent in support of applications cannot
be returned.
Leicester Pride’s Open Stage
initiative is funded by the Arts Council
as part of a wider project to further
develop the performance programme at
the Festival. The full grant of £25,000
includes capacity to involve Black and
Asian artists as well as funding to
develop the quality of the performance
infrastructure (stage, sound, backstage
facilities) at the event.
NOTES FOR EDITORS:
1) Leicester Pride is the annual lesbian,
gay and bisexual festival for Leicester
and the East Midlands. Taking place
in June each year, the festival includes
a parade through the city centre and
a multi-cultural arts festival on Victoria
Park. Attendance at the 2002 festival
reached 9,500 - a record for the event.
2) Leicester Pride is organised by Leicester
Pride Ltd - a company managed by an
executive committee of volunteers -
and is staged in partnership with the
city’s LGB services, gay venues
and arts centres. 3) Leicester Pride
is a free non profit-making event and
is funded by awards from the Arts Council
and Citizenship 21, the event’s
sponsors, fundraising by the city’s
LGBT venues and income generated from
the festival site. 4) Reviews of Leicester
Pride 2002 praised the festival for
the diversity of its staging, including
Bollywood singers, Egyptian dancers
and Punjabi drummers to reflect the
city’s vibrant mutli-culturalism.
